New Media and Me

Me, at a very young age, already using a computer.

Me, at a very young age, already using a computer.

The other day, I was watching Leo Laporte’s TWiTLive from the New Media Expo and in the recording they briefly talked about how their are a lot of people playing with new technology but not creating anything.

This thought really got me thinking about how people my age have grown up on and around the internet and this whole concept of new media whereas others have been “fathers” to the movement.

As a child of the web 2.0 and new media era, the entire experience (at least for me) has been very passive. I spend most of my time surfing the internet, watching videos, and reading blogs written by fathers of this whole new media movement but I get absolutely nothing done. I have attempted many times, to create a podcast of some form or another but always fail because after doing multiple episodes you render yourself a fanbase of zero. I think this problem stems from the hard to penetrate market that is already dominated by giants such as Revision3, Weblogs Inc., TWiT, Gary Vaynerchuk and others who seemingly arrived to the “new media party” before us. I am incredibly envious of these giants but I must say they are on top for a reason. They produce exciting content on a daily basis with a very exstensive community to support them.

These companies and people are using incredibly innovative technology and getting content into the public eye. My problem, on the other hand, is that I love playing with the new technology but never actually put out anything that is new and exciting. A prime example is that I just jailbroke my iPhone so I could install Qik to live stream but have yet to actually use it in a productive way, the idea of live streaming video from a phone just seems really cool to me.

Hopefully I will be turning this trend of mine around in the near future by actually creating content.

Drive America - An Epic Road Trip

Design News

Lately, I have been working on a bunch of different things for some friends going on an epic road trip late next week. Unlike your typical roadtrip, this one will be completely decked out with tech.
The crew and I have outfitted the trunk of the Ford Explorer with a Shuttle PC, which will be accessed [...]

Pownce Photo Contest

Photography

Pownce Contest Entry #1, originally uploaded by mattwitmer.

Pownce, the up and coming social networking website, announced a few days ago that they were running a contest to find the best photo with their logo.
I am a big Pownce fan, so I took the vector version of their logo and blew it up to fit an [...]

I have returned to the site known as Flickr. My main reason for the return is the social networking aspect of the site. It really allows you to get great feedback on your photography as well as meet many new people.
This photo was taken with the new 70-200mm f/2.8 and is [...]

Vector Freebie: Route Sign

Design Freebies

The latest craze across the internet, in various niches, is the idea of freebies, especially in the design community. So I figured, Hey, why don’t I join in.
I was recently working on a T-Shirt design for the epic adventure that three high school graduates will be taking in a couple of weeks (DriveAmerica). And in [...]

To Infinity and Into Space?

News

Today NASA announced that on the upcoming Shuttle mission, they would have a very special plastic guest by the name of Buzz Lightyear. I don’t think Zurg (pictured), Sworn Enemy of the Galactic Alliance (Buzz’s Employer), would like this idea at all. This is being done in conjunction, of course, with the Walt Disney Company [...]

iPhone 2.01 Review

Although no one really knows exactly what Apple put into the 2.01 software update I like to speculate.
First off, I noticed nearly instanteously after upgrading that I didn’t seem to get as good of 3G reception as I previously had. Secondly, the iPhone seems to compute keystrokes much quicker, which is great for those of [...]

New Glass, Once again

Self-Portrait, originally uploaded by mattwitmer.
A few days ago, I purchased another piece of glass to add to my photographic arsenal. Some say that this piece, the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, is the best piece of glass Nikon has ever made and I must agree.
Because of it’s f/1.8 aperture, it functions incredibly well in low light. This [...]
